About Ensemble Control
A frontier research lab building Physical AI for extreme environments — inventing the sensing and actuation that let autonomous machines perceive and act where humans and conventional robots cannot.
Leadership
A researcher advancing reinforcement learning and control for machines that operate at the edge of the possible.

Dr. Abhishek Gupta
Founder & Director
Founder & Director of Ensemble Control Inc. and Associate Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department at The Ohio State University, where he also serves as Co-Director of the IITB–OSU Frontier Center.
A leading researcher in reinforcement learning, optimal control, and high-dimensional optimization, his recent work spans perturbation theory for advanced control and generalized policy gradient theorems—in collaboration with General Motors R&D. He has recently presented at the TDAI AI Summit and the 2025 Allerton Conference, and works across materials discovery, soft robotics, and control systems for Physical AI in extreme environments.
Our Mission
Ensemble Control Inc. invents the sensing and actuation that let autonomous machines perceive and act where humans and conventional robots cannot — in orbit, the deep sea, disaster zones, and nuclear and hazardous settings. We pursue resilient multimodal perception, soft and continuum actuation, and policies that transfer from simulation to the unforgiving real world.
Founded in 2023 and based in Columbus, Ohio, we work across three research areas — sensing, actuation, and Physical AI — in collaboration with partners in academia and industry. A flagship demonstration: octopus-arm actuators for servicing data centers in orbit.
Research Principles
The standards that guide how we do our research.
Rigor
Claims earned through theory, simulation, and hard experiment under real conditions.
Safety
Machines built for orbit, the deep sea, and hazardous zones must fail gracefully by design.
Openness
We publish, share results, and build with collaborators across academia and industry.
First Principles
We reason up from physics and control theory rather than down from convention.
